History

The history of the university begins on September 18, 1957, when, by order of the Minister of Higher Education of the USSR, an evening polytechnic institute was established in Ulyanovsk on the basis of the evening branch of the Kuibyshev Industrial Institute.

The structure of the institute was determined by four faculties:

  • mechanical with specialties "Technology of mechanical engineering", "Metal-cutting machines and tools"
  • energy with the specialty "Electrification of industrial enterprises and installations"
  • construction with a specialty "Industrial and civil construction"
  • correspondence faculty with specialties "Mechanical Engineering" and "Instrument Engineering".
An important event that determined the further development of the institute was the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of July 12, 1962 and, in accordance with it, the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR of July 30, 1962 on the organization of the Ulyanovsk Polytechnic Institute (ULPI) with a full-time form of education. At the same time, it retained evening and distance learning. In accordance with the Decree, mechanical (aka mechanical engineering) and radio engineering faculties were organized for daytime education and 21 departments were created. In order to improve educational and methodological work with students of correspondence courses in 1962, an educational and consulting center was opened in the city of Dimitrovgrad (Melekess).

In 1962, the department "Electrical Engineering" was divided into two departments: "Electric Drive and Automation of Industrial Enterprises" and "Power Supply of Industrial Enterprises and Cities". They laid the foundation for the Faculty of Energy, organized in 1967.

At the suggestion of the regional leaders and the leadership of the institute, in 1970, by the Order of the Ministry of Higher Education of the RSFSR, the Faculty of Mechanics organized the training of engineers in the specialty "Industrial and Civil Engineering" with a full-time education, and in 1973 the Faculty of Civil Engineering was formed.

From the first days of the institute's existence, the most serious attention was paid to the physical education of students and the protection of their health. National teams were created in chess, volleyball, basketball, table tennis. Over the years, the sport continued to gain strength, and in 1964 the Department of Physical Education was organized.

In 1970, the construction of the educational and laboratory building (building No. 3) was completed. It housed the radio engineering and energy faculties. In the same year, the construction of a sports and recreation camp began on the banks of the Volga, near the village of Sadovka in the Staromainsky district. By this time, two student hostels for 500 people each, a boiler room, and a sports hall had already been put into operation.

In the 1970s, the construction of the Aviastar aircraft manufacturing plant began in Ulyanovsk. There was a need for the training of engineering personnel. For this purpose, in 1986, the aircraft building faculty was organized. It was placed directly on the territory of the plant. Now it is the Institute of Aviation Technology and Management - one of the divisions of UlSTU.

In 1975, in the northern part of the city, the construction of a unique building began, consisting of three blocks: the main educational building, the assembly hall (aka the Tarelka cinema and concert hall) and the library. The main academic building was put into operation in 1984, the library in 1987, and the assembly hall in 1991.

In 1992, the Faculty of Humanities was formed.

By order of the State Committee for Higher Education of the Russian Federation No. 524 dated May 26, 1994, the Ulyanovsk Polytechnic Institute was transformed into the Ulyanovsk State Technical University (UlSTU).

Ulyanovsk State Technical University at the time of 1995

In 1995, the Faculty of Information Systems and Technologies was opened at UlSTU.

In 1999, the Faculty of Economics and Mathematics was formed. Since September 1, 2016, by decision of the Academic Council of the University, the faculty has been renamed into engineering and economics, since new profiles "Innovation" and "System Analysis" having an engineering component have been added to the economic areas of training.

UlSTU was one of the first in the Volga region to actively develop international activities, immediately after the abolition in 1991 of restrictions on establishing direct bilateral relations and concluding agreements with foreign partners. In a relatively short time, the first protocols and agreements on international cooperation were signed with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI, USA), the Lower Rhine Higher Technical School (Germany), the Novosandetsk branch of the Russian-Polish Friendship Society, etc. At the same time, the first foreign students from India. The initiative and activity of the technical university was supported by the State Committee for Science and Higher Education, and on the basis of Ulyanovsk State Technical University in 1992, the Ulyanovsk City Interuniversity Center for International Cooperation (UGMTsMS) was established.

In 2018, the International Institute was opened at UlSTU, which is doing a lot of work on enrolling, training and adapting foreign students, as well as on international cooperation with partners.

In 2018, the Regional Technology Center for the Industrial Internet in Mechanical Engineering was opened at UlSTU together with DMG MORI. It has become a unique platform in the region for the creation and development of interdisciplinary projects in the field of industrial Internet.

In 2019, on the basis of UlSTU, a special space was opened for the collective work of students, research and project activities in priority areas of the National Technology Initiative - the scientific and educational center "Boiling Point of UlSTU".
